Brick and stone surfaces, whether a fireplace, exterior wall, or interior accent, bring undeniable character to a home. Yet darker or dated finishes can sometimes weigh down a space. We’re sharing how to paint interior brick, because with the right techniques and tools, these surfaces can be transformed into elevated focal points while still preserving their natural texture and charm.

We transformed the dark gray flagstone in our home by using a multi-step process that provided gave the finished product a look of authenticity, as if the brick had originally looked that way.

How to Paint Interior Brick and Stone: 

The process began with a strategic foundation. We applied a primer coat, Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground, in the exact tone we envisioned for the grout, creating cohesion from the start. From there, each individual stone was hand-painted using five carefully selected colorways, adding depth and subtle variation across the surface.

To complete the look, we introduced a final layer: a light, irregular brushing of plaster applied in select areas. This softened the overall effect and gave the stone an aged, timeworn quality, elegant, but not overworked.
