Pirate Nerf Gun Birthday Party

We often lovingly refer to my second oldest, who has a vision impairment and wears an eyepatch daily, as Pirate Landon. Since the age of three, he has shown strength through surgery, therapy, a lot of doctors visits and testing, and he rarely complains. So when he asked for a pirate nerf gun birthday party, I knew this one had to be special. Sadly, when we woke up on party day the weather was calling for thunderstorms, so we had to change plans, clear furniture out and move everything indoors. It doesn’t surprise me that our sweet boy didn’t let the weather disappoint him due to the ability to rise above. The kids ended up having so much fun with a nerf gun war in the pouring rain with daddy, Captain Sparrow, leading the charge.
Here are some of our favorite details:
-My son asked if our family of 7 could dress like pirates for his party, so we had to oblige. I love that my husband embraced his role and became a pretty good looking Captain Sparrow (if I don’t say so myself!). Thankful a couple of friends helped us piece together my and my daughter’s costumes and the other items we pulled from the dress up box. For the baby, I threw together a no-sew tutu right before the party started…it was very easy to do!
-A large treasure map provided the perfect backdrop for the food table and a ship sail (ivory flat sheet) and the pirate flag hung above the dress up station.
-The pirate ship cupcake holder.
-The ship wheel popcorn boxes made from my Silhouette.
-The ship mast made with a wooden rod and paper in a bucket of sand.
-The pirate cake pops and treasure map cake pops made by Cupcake Factory.
-The pirate ship cake made by my talented sister Sarah Sharp, complete with a plank, treasure chest, canon, and guard rails made from chocolate rice Krispie treats.
-The “message in a bottle” with treats. We labeled them M&M’s Lost at Sea.
-On the food table, we used red and white striped butcher paper under a burlap cloth with netting and pirate treasure, golden necklaces and pearls, golden keys, and compasses sprinkled on top.
-For the Nerf Gun Station, we had darts and protective glasses labeled Load Yer Weapons and Prepare for Battle.-We had a Dress Like Yer a Matey station with party favors.
-The dining table featured two large lego pirate ships and rafts that were my husband’s when he was a child. My boys had fun building them with their daddy before the party, and it was great added entertainment for the kids since we had to move the party indoors!
