An Elegant Neutral Living Room Design, Before and After

After months of planning and a few weeks of remodeling, I am so excited to reveal our new living room! As you know, we’ve been transitioning our home to white and neutral colors. We started with a white kitchen remodel first, all the while tackling our son’s new blue and white bedroom, and then moved directly into transforming our formal living room from beige colors and outdated furnishings to a gorgeous neutral living room design. I am absolutely in love with the finished product and I’m so excited to share the process with you.

A very special thank you to our partners on this neutral living room design: Safavieh | Kathryn J. LeMaster Art and Design | J. Hunter Art | Tukor Collection | Sherwin-Williams | Capital Lighting | Orian Rugs | Robert Abbey Lighting | Lo Home | This post contains affiliate links, click here to see our full disclosure.
Let’s start with a few before and after photos before we get into the details!

I can’t get over the transformation! The process started over lunch with someone I’ve known for 14 years, who I’ve had the pleasure of watching grow into a very skilled and acclaimed Interior Designer. I sat down wanting to pick the brain of Kathryn LeMaster, of Kathryn J. LeMaster Art and Design, and learn more about the design world. I left that lunch with a rekindled friendship and felt awe-inspired and ready to take on the many design projects I had been dreaming about for so long.
We soon made a plan to partner together to transform my formal Living Room that has gorgeous soaring ceilings and a grand fireplace. The living room had beautiful bones and great potential, it just needed the touch of one very talented designer to bring new life to the space. I will be sharing all the details of the design process with Kathryn from start to finish next week, but today I wanted to reveal the gorgeous photos and all of the sources used.
The work actually began just prior to our moving in when we had the walls painted in Sherwin-Williams Dover White, and the trim was painted in Pure White. If you’ve read my other room redesign posts (white kitchen remodel and blue and white bedroom), then you know we used these colors throughout our home. I’m a big fan of Sherwin Williams, and I love how the quality has stood both the test of time and a busy household of seven people. I also love the Dover white because it’s a perfect creamy neutral white that doesn’t lean too blue, yellow, or pink, and the pure white color on the trim provides a clean, crisp look. The ceiling is painted in 50% Dover White.

Kathryn came to my home in early September and measured the Living Room. We discussed my preferred style and she asked to see some examples of rooms that inspire me. I explained that I love French country with a touch of modern, and while I wanted the room to be elegant, it was important that my family could feel comfortable and enjoy the space . . . I like to think of it as casual elegance.
Kathryn asked me to create a Pinterest board that we could share and she would pull together a floor plan to include my grand piano and any new furnishings. We met late in September for the design presentation where she presented me with a Do It Yourself (DIY) plan which included links for all the furniture, lighting and decor she recommended. I want to share more specifics on this entire experience next week because it was such a fun and rewarding process working with a designer on a DIY plan. I loved getting to be involved but having the guidance of a professional, plus working with Kathryn felt like I was redesigning my living room with a trusted friend!

FURNITURE

One of the desires for this room was to have a grouping of furniture in the heart of the room centered around the fireplace. I LOVE the two Leandra French Country Settees from Safavieh. They bring a rustic element to the room, but the gorgeous wood detail and plush upholstery provide both the comfort and elegance I was looking for in this space. I am so impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of these pieces! The two Safavieh White Modern Ming Garden Stools provide that hint of modern appeal I was hoping for but are also very functional as a place to set a drink or double as extra seating when we’re entertaining a crowd.

The Mystic Ottomans with silver nail heads tie in well with the antique mirror over the fireplace, and I love that they can easily be moved aside or to another area in the room depending on our needs. The fabric feels very luxurious and they are made very well.

I love all the gold details in the room including the sleek and classic appeal of the Aslan Coffee Table. The new coffee table is one of my favorites because it’s the center of the room and where friends and loved ones will be gathered around. It will be so much fun to use the Felicity Bar Cart for entertaining and for stying during each holiday, and the Francis Etagere provides more space to showcase treasured family mementos and favorite decor items.

For four generations, the family behind the Safavieh brand has dedicated its resources to providing quality, durability, beauty, and artistry in their handmade rugs and beautiful furniture. Safavieh began in 1914 as a supplier of antique Oriental rugs to leading interior designers. They have continued to curate one of the country’s finest collections of antique rugs from all across the world, working with notable style leaders and designers globally. Over the years their business has grown to offer a huge selection of furnishings and decor, including furniture, lighting, mirrors, and more, all offered within a broad range of budgets. Their selection includes antique reproductions, transitional designs, and fashion-forward contemporary styles as well. There is literally something for everyone!

With manufacturing facilities on three continents and two million square feet of warehouse space, they drop-ship thousands of packages daily to customers on behalf of their retailers in all 50 states, and Canada, South America, Europe and Asia. Once we placed our order, I was shocked how quickly they got all the furniture and lighting to us, and the quality and beauty is second to none!

LIGHTING:

Another key element to a room is the lighting, I am thrilled with how warm and inviting our new lighting makes the room feel. Safavieh has such a huge selection of all types of lighting. The beautiful Tonia Floor Lamps fit in well with their gilt gold color, but I love the diamond and acrylic details as well. The shade is the perfect off-white color, and it is weighted and very high quality so it won’t easily tip over. Kathryn recommended getting an adjustable lamp for the corner nook by the piano which is perfect for when someone is playing, but having that additional light in the corner adds more warmth in the room as well. This Nadia Adjustable Floor Lamp is an antique gold finish and ties in the drapery hardware and the interior of the piano as well.

The Annika Blush lamps with silk shades from Robert Abbey are gorgeous! They are hand-painted and made to order, so you know you are getting high quality. The gilt gold edging and crackle detail is so pretty, and they are the perfect color blush!

We replaced a ceiling fan with this gorgeous Chapman Flanders 8-light Chandelier from Capitol Lighting. The washed wood ties in well with the French Country appeal and I love the elegance of the crystals. At 36″ wide, it’s the perfect size for this space and really adds to the overall ambiance without overwhelming the room. Capital Lighting has the best customer service and an incredible selection of lighting!

ORIGINAL ART PAINTING:

It’s hard to convey in text or photos just how beautiful this piece of commissioned artwork is by Joseph Hunter Art. The artist came to our home to see the furniture and all the finishes and then provided several color studies for this project. This is a garden scene and has colors of pink, gold, cream, and little touches of lavender. It reminds me of walking through a secret garden and the sun peeking through the flowers at the golden hour. When he brought it in I had tears, it is that gorgeous! I will be sharing more about this incredibly talented artist in the future, so stay tuned!

RUG:

You’ll never believe that this new rug is an indoor-outdoor rug! From Orian Rugs, the Seaborn Natural is the perfect neutral rug and I love the scroll design. It features a textured high-low pile scrollwork design, creating a designer look in our space.  It is easily cleaned, so it is great for having little ones in the house enjoying this room. It is so soft, but still elegant! I have a very similar rug in our bedroom that I’ll be showing you once I’ve finished the redesign of that room!

FIREPLACE TRANSFORMATION
One of her key recommendations was to transform the grand fireplace. I was a little surprised by this recommendation at first, but when I saw her vision, I was so excited to see it come together! As you can see by the before and after photos, it was quite the transformation. I will be sharing in a later post how simple it is to transform your fireplace to look like limestone, but for now I’ll share that over the course of two weeks, the fireplace was made to look like aged limestone using the color Pediment from Sherwin-Williams, with a painted tile hearth to resemble travertine, and a large antique (otherwise known as silvered) mirror from the Tukor Collection installed. We also installed this gorgeous tile from Triton Stone. The tile is in a lantern shape and it has a gorgeous mirrored detail. The combination of the mirror and the white tile is absolutely gorgeous and every time I see it shimmer in the light my heart skips a beat! We styled the fireplace with large white Beaufort Ginger Jars and this gold gilt fireplace screen.

ACCENTS AND ACCESSORIES

The console table has a gorgeous gold key detail that fits in with the overall aesthetics. We found this French writing desk and chair for the corner that provides a little space for storage and organization. We hung the artwork we collected on our trip to Italy. This artwork is very special and Kathryn recommended adding a gold gilt finish to the existing frames and it really helped the pieces go perfectly in the new space!

Another design element I love is the floor mirror that is staged behind the piano. It shows off the elegance of the piano while reflecting more light into the room. The new palm plant in this toulon planter brings life to the room and I love the splash of green in the corner!

The new barrel chairs have a White Frame Pillow in French Blue from Lo Home that is not only incredibly comfortable, but it’s perfect in this space! On the French settee’s we have smokey blue pillows found at HomeGoods, and the pink pillows with blue greek key trim are custom made. I absolutely love how all the pillows turned out!

Kathryn styled the Aslan Coffee Table with several books including Peonies: Beautiful Varieties for Home & GardenFrench Country Cottage, and Eternal Chanel. She also placed a pink Voluspa Maison Candle that smells so good. Lauren Haskell from Lo Home sent me her large and small Cherry Blossom Pink Hand-Painted Ginger Jars and I will have so much fun filling these with fresh flowers throughout the year. They are handpainted and come in many colors, and they are so elegant and fun!

The new Francis Etagere is styled with treasured books from around our home, as well as some new and old photo frames and plants. She also brought in this pink globe (how fun is this!) and blue ceramic bloom vase. Lauren from Lo Home sent us this acrylic display box that has the prettiest gold and pink top. I’ll love changing things out for each season and putting fresh flowers and plants here as well.

The Felicity Bar Cart is styled with blush pink agate coasters, marble tray, and a blush pink vase. We also used our crystal decanters that were wedding gifts and these new white vases for styling.

Kathryn styled the new desk with this blush pink accessory tray, a Voluspa Rose Mini Candle and the cutest letter opener and pair of acrylic scissors. I’m also fully prepared with Thank you notes readily available. I love that she used a pink bloom vase as a pen holder, and placed this new gorgeous journal and planner! Watching her style this desk made me feel like she was in my head, because I wouldn’t change a thing and I love every detail! Speaking of details, we switched out the cabinet knobs on the desk and replaced with these quatre-floral brass drawer tassel pulls from Lo Home. They have many colors to choose from and I just love the extra pop of pink and gold on the desk. I finally have a little space in our home to stay organized!

Love the Dover white and pure white in your house. What type is the paint in LR and master bath; Satin, gloss, semi, and is the trim in oil or gloss.

    Thanks

    1. Hi! Thanks for the kind words. We use Dover White Satin on the walls, 50% Dover White Flat on ceilings, and Semi-gloss Pure White on cabinets and trim. Our trim was oil based previously, so yes the Pure White is oil based. Hope this helps!
