I’m so excited to finally reveal our playroom makeover! This large room was one of the selling points for our new home, but I’ll admit at first I was intimidated by the large space and how to organize all the toys and activity areas we were wanting to create. I decided to divide up the space in sections and I’m excited to show you the end product. This room was the first room I started working on, but with trying to handle my toddler’s boy room, kitchen remodel, and living room remodel all at the same time, I am just getting a chance to finish it up and share the details. I hope these family playroom ideas will inspire you to create a colorful playroom in your home!

FAMILY PLAYROOM IDEAS: STORAGE SOLUTIONS

The first project we took on for this room was to tackle the Ikea Billy Bookcase built-ins. This was the first big DIY project my husband and I did together. I simply measured the wall, drew out a plan for how many bookcases I would need, and then I took a day trip to Memphis to shop. My husband assembled everything, and then bolted them in place and added trim. I’ll be sharing a full description of this DIY project in a later post, but I’m thrilled with how they turned out.

This area has given us great storage space for toys and games! For the bookcases that are exposed, I simply pulled together the colorful wooden toys we have in the room and put them on display. They can either reach them or ask me to pull them down when they are ready to play. I also pulled out all the artwork I’ve saved throughout their toddler and preschool years and I displayed some of my favorites in the bookcases and on the wall. This is one of my favorite details of their room!

I found the perfect size baskets for storing their toys that also look great on the shelves. I looked everywhere for acrylic hocking jars so I could store their blocks and other small collections of toys and I was thrilled to find these canisters which are a little smaller than most hocking jars but they are the perfect size for them to pull down and play, and I love that the colors can be seen!

FAMILY PLAYROOM IDEAS: LOUNGE AREA

I think every playroom or family room needs a place for relaxing! This slipcovered sofa has been such a hit for the kids. It’s great for reading books at night, we can all pile up and I can read a book to all of the kids together. But it’s been our new spot for family movie nights as well. I love that I can easily take off the slipcover (an Ikea find, but you can also find one here) and throw it in the wash! I also love these colorful pillows (here and similar here), and the Rainbow pillow I found that ties in the rainbow art and toys found around the room! Did you notice the little cloud mobile? It is so cute and would be so fun in a nursery too! For curtains, I just wanted something to frame the window so I went with a white sheer panel with pom pom trim along with a simple white curtain rod.

We traded out our previous dark wood train table for this white train table (similar here) so it would go with our theme for the space. Even though it is a little big, I think we found the perfect spot for it and my kids still love playing with their trains!

FAMILY PLAYROOM IDEAS: READING AND CRAFT NOOK

I have to say that this little nook is my favorite spot. My oldest son calls it the “library”. I shared about my beloved grandmother before. An accomplished musician, poet, and author, she was the Arkansas Poet Laureate and instilled in me a love for reading and an appreciation of the arts. When I stayed with her, she would take me to the library and book signings. Some the books on these shelves are children’s books that she had given me as a child, her inscription still on the inside.

One of the things that is important to me as a mother, is to instill that same love for reading in my kids. I’m thrilled that they have these ladder bookcases to store all their books that span across their ages. We used baskets (here and here) for practical storage but I also love the natural element they bring to the room. To add in additional pops of color, we used a playful lamp, and some fun wooden toys they love like a rainbow and ring stacker so it’s easy to pull them down to play but great for decoration as well!

I’m also thrilled they have the table and chairs so they can all gather, or have room for friends to play. I love the colorful details of the dot rug and pom pom garland, and with the bright white of the room! The chalkboard has been so fun to use for learning and to place a weekly scripture and/or quote. I use the small table for storage of craft materials and card games, and I’ve already walked in to find the kids coloring, creating, or playing cards together. They are using this space just as I had hoped!

Sometimes it’s the little details that really bring a wow-factor in a room. My husband and son surprised me with this colorful sign that is perfect in the playroom. We say “Love you the moon and back” every day so I love having this sign! The wooden toys are so great for display and they bring in more pops of color, but easily accessible when they want to play with them.

This castle mural was already in place when we purchased our home, it was a selling point for sure! I want to add some artistic details that will help it blend in with our whimsical space, but it has been a favorite detail for the kids! Inside the castle is a small play space dedicated for all the girl toys in our home. I like that all the pink is contained in one place and that the girls have a space to play together…but don’t worry the boys are encouraged to play right alongside them as well, ha! I have plans to do a few fun things to this area, so I’m sure I’ll be touching on this room again in the future!

We painted the entire room in Sherwin-Williams Dover White, which is the color you will see throughout most of our home. I chose Dover White because it was the perfect creamy shade of white and I love it. Once we painted, I realized our trim really needed to be painted as well so we chose Pure White for the trim (the same color we used for the playhouse). For the ceiling paint, we went with 50% Dover White.
