DIY Gold Leaf Easter Eggs

I’m thrilled At Home in Arkansas magazine is featuring this easy DIY tutorial for Gold Leaf Easter Eggs along with my Easter Party Ideas in their April issue!

You’d be surprised at how easy these DIY Easter eggs are to make. By the look of the photo, you might think these took more time, experience, and expertise.

With the right supplies you can make these gold leaf Easter eggs in no time. You can be as creative with your designs as you want to be.

What do you need to make gold leaf Easter eggs?

  • food coloring
  • vinegar
  • water
  • containers for each dye color
  • hard boiled eggs
  • gold leaf
  • gold leaf specialty glue (available with gold leaf at hobby stores)
  • small paintbrush

How do you make gold leaf Easter eggs?

  1. Combine ½ cup boiling water, 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 10-20 drops of desired food coloring in each container.
  2. Mix colors to create different hues.
  3. Soak a hard-boiled egg in the food coloring for five minutes.
  4. For lighter hues, reduce the amount of soaking time. For darker colors, increase it.
  5. Remove eggs and allow them to dry completely.supplies for gold leafing Easter eggs
  6. Using the gold-leaf glue and a paintbrush, create your desired design on a dyed egg.
  7. Allow the glue to sit for 10 minutes or until it becomes tacky.
  8. Cover the design with the gold-leaf sheet, lightly burnish and then carefully peel off the sheet to reveal your design in gold.
  9. Use a dry paintbrush to brush away any unwanted remnants.

For this DIY Easter egg project you can use hard-boiled, plastic, or wooden eggs.  The plastic eggs will float in the dye so you’ll need to apply force to get them to stay soaking in the mixture.

Decorate with these DIY Easter Eggs

Once you’ve finished your eggs, you can use them as a coffee table decoration, as a decoration for your Easter table, or a fun addition to Easter baskets. I used them as a part of my Easter Party table decorations and I love how beautiful they look on the table! You could also easily add the faux version of these to an Easter wreath.
