ELEGANT LIVING ROOM CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

If you’ve been following along in our new home renovation, you know that our kitchen and living room were recently redesigned and renovated. When I first saw this house, I fell in love with the two-story living room and foyer, the beautiful iron spindle staircase and balcony, and the grand fireplace. I could envision from the very beginning a large flocked tree, elegant fresh garland draped across the fireplace the banisters…so that’s just what we did!

With decorating our home in white and neutrals, I knew I wanted a flocked tree. I have heard so many good things about King of Christmas, and I have to say they lived up to everything I had heard. First of all, this 10-foot tree was the largest tree I’ve ever owned, but it was the easiest to set up and literally took minutes. You simply take the four pieces out of the box and the branches literally fall into place. I had to do some slight fluffing, but the branches are so soft that it didn’t take much at all. Here’s a fun photo of the tree at night:

I was equally impressed that the flocking wasn’t messy at all, which had been another one of my concerns. It wasn’t all over my clothing after setting up, and I swept and there wasn’t but a few small pieces on the ground. I love it so much, I want a smaller version of this tree in my dining room next year and maybe even one for the bedroom and office, ha!

Let’s talk about the ornaments and décor I used in our living room Christmas decorations! I looked all over town and online before I finally found the perfect four-inch white velvet ribbon. It has gold metallic backing which I love because the white velvet has a very rich and luxurious look, and you get a hint of shine when the ribbon intertwined around the tree. I typically cut my ribbon into 24-36 inch sections but this year I just weaved it up and down the tree without cutting. I really like it either way but didn’t want to cut the ribbon this year.

I always start with the ribbon and then add floral picks where I’ve folded the ribbon into the tree. I used white and gold poinsettias that I’ve collected from my local craft store. With the larger tree, I used more poinsettias this year and I just loved the look!

I really wanted an overall white tree this year, but I had a lot of champagne colored and light gold ornaments that I used as a base for my tree. I try to reuse as much as I can and buy an assortment of new fresh items each year. I found a beautiful selection of white ornaments from Amara Living. I love that they had both shatterproof casual ornaments, and some very unique options as well.  I found white assorted baubles, pink and white with gold glitter, scalloped ornaments, beaded ornaments, and iridescent baubles as well. My tree was the prettiest it’s ever been! Here’s a fun view from the balcony:

On the mantle, I used fresh cedar garland. I typically get my cedar garland from a local hardware store but this year I wanted it earlier than Thanksgiving weekend, so I searched online and came across a company called Lynch Creek Farms. I purchased 120 feet of their cedar garland and I was so impressed with the quality! It was about twice as thick as the garland I’ve used in the past and it was just beautiful. I typically will combine two strands, but this garland was so thick and plentiful that I only needed one strand. I let it drape to the floor to give my mantle the wow factor this year. I really wanted the garland to shine, so this year I just added a string of lights, I gave it a light dusting of spray snow, and I added a string of glittering white pearls.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about how I display my stockings over the years since we have a large family. I no longer use a stocking holder. I spray painted a very inexpensive curtain rod metallic gold. I simply add 5 lb. command hooks to the mantle (be sure to follow directions and let them sit to adhere to the surface), I use green wire to attach the curtain rod to the command hooks, and I hang my stockings on the gold rod. Some years I’ll hang all my stockings in a row across the fireplace, this year I hung a few on each side and I love the look!

I have one more tip for your stockings, and I swear by this every year! I take 2-3 empty plastic grocery bags and place them in the stocking as a filling. I put one back in the bottom, one bag in the middle and sometimes I need a third bag towards the top. The filling balances the stockings out and helps them hang straight in a row. You may have to play with the placement of your bags, but this works like a charm for me every year!

I go back and forth every year on monogramming their stockings. Last year, I purchased these white stockings hoping the neutral color would allow us to use the stockings every year no matter what color I choose for the decorations. I do think they would look so great monogrammed, but years ago I found these wooden initials that I painted metallic gold. The kids do love the initial letters so I think for now I will keep them as is.

I exchanged my large white urns for candles so we could enjoy a glow all season long and I have to share a story about the gorgeous art piece above my mantle. I was scrolling Instagram late one night and came across this artist who creates a series of Nutcracker paintings. Jennifer Collander’s work has been featured in Better Homes and Garden and I fell in love with everything I saw. The Nutcracker is one of my favorite holiday themes and we’ve hosted two Nutcracker birthday parties for the girls (in 2013 and 2017). My living room has touches of pink and blue so I knew one of her pieces would finish off my décor perfectly. She created this custom piece entitled Rose Ballet, which means pink ballet in French. As you can see, it’s gorgeous and so perfect for our living room holiday decorations!

On the coffee table, I filled my pink ginger jar with winter greens, pine cones, iced eucalyptuses, and iced peonies…a faux arrangement that I knew would last through the season without any fuss! I displayed some of my bottle-brush trees and ornaments in my marble tray and placed some white gift boxes on the bottom shelf.

I kept the remaining décor pretty simple so the focal points could really shine. One the accent table I used a white Santa and two gold reindeer I found at Home Goods, along with a pedestal bowl of ornaments.

I loved having a bar cart to decorate this year! I set up a hot chocolate station for my kids, and guests to enjoy, and enjoy it we did! I simply displayed my Christmas mugs on a marble tiered stand, used a few of my apothecary jars for the hot chocolate mix and the festive marshmallows I found at Home Goods.

On my writing desk, I featured a few of my pink nutcrackers (I have accumulated quite the collection over the years) and I think they bring such a fun, whimsical element to my decor. I exchanged my regular pillows with white faux fur pillows, and these white “joy” pillows and pink snowflake pillows.
